The Triumph of The Super Mario Bros. Movie Continues on the Global Box Office Charts

The Super Mario Bros. Movie In less than a month since its release and with the various records it has achieved, The Super Mario Bros. Movies from Universal have managed to pass its greatest achievement. Last weekend, the animated video game adaptation became the first film of 2023 to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office. The film added $40 million at the domestic box office this weekend – its fourth – and another $68 million overseas, as the film refuses to slow down after dominating the box office all of April.

Total domestic revenue of The Super Mario Bros. Movie has now totaled $490 million, with an additional $533 million coming from overseas. This brings its total global revenue to over $1 billion. Super Mario is now the third Illumination film to pass that mark, after Despicable Me 3 ($1.032 billion) and Minions ($1.157 billion). It is also the fifth film from the post-pandemic era to pass $1 billion worldwide, and the 10th animated film in history to achieve this feat.

The film broke several records on its way to this momentous moment. It is the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever, the biggest film of 2023 at the global box office, and the second-biggest film in Universal history at the domestic box office, after Jurassic World ($653 million). The film is also only slightly behind the mega-hit Incredibles 2, which remains the biggest animated film of all time domestically, with an all-time gross of $608 million. Super Mario is now the second-biggest-grossing animated film at the domestic box office, after beating Frozen 2 ($477 million) and Finding Dory ($486 million).

Featuring a voice cast consisting of Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as plumber brothers Mario and Luigi, The Super Mario Bros. Movie isn't Hollywood's first attempt at adapting the popular video game franchise into a film. Previously, a less successful live-action film titled Super Mario Bros. had been released. The film, starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper as villains, grossed just under $30 million at the domestic box office in 1993.

The success of the animated film Super Mario also confirmed Illumination as an animation house to be reckoned with. The studio has now produced three multibillion-dollar hit films, with two other films that have grossed over $900 million worldwide – Despicable Me 2 ($975 million) and Minions: The Rise of Gru ($939 million).

Its success is also a reminder that children are still an underserved demographic – one of the main complaints in the weeks leading up to Super Mario's release was that studios had not released a children's film since December's Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. then, which has quietly made nearly half a billion dollars worldwide.

It helps that The Super Mario Bros. Movie ended up being a smash hit, successfully attracting not only kids looking for colorful adventures, but also adults looking to reminisce about their childhood. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, this animated film also features the voices of Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen.
